Addiction

Common types of addiction

Addiction is an unhealthy dependence on a substance or behaviour. The substance or behaviour may be benign, or even healthy, in moderation, but if dependency takes hold a person becomes a victim of the addiction. Then physical and mental suffering is inevitable.

Addictions can be broadly categorized as 'substance' or 'behavioural'.

Common substance addictions include:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Prescribed, over-the-counter, or illicit drugs

Common behavioural addictions include:

  • Eating
  • Sex
  • Gambling

These are some common addictions, however, a person can be addicted to any substance or behaviour.
