Insomnia

What causes insomnia?

There are many factors that can trigger an ‘imbalance’ in the mind/body, which leads to insomnia, or other sleep difficulties. Some examples are:

  • a change in routine or lifestyle
  • worry, anxiety or stress
  • poor eating or sleeping habits
  • alcohol and caffeine or other drugs or medications
  • external conditions that are not conducive to sleep, such as loud noise or excess light
  • too little (or too much) physical exercise
  • excitement or overstimulation of the mind
  • hormonal change (such as during menopause)
  • symptoms of illness

In the short term the adverse effects of poor or inadequate sleep may be manageable, but in the longer-term they can have a significant influence on a person’s relationships, work, social life, leisure activities and sense of self-esteem and empowerment. Research has clearly indicated that inadequate sleep in young and older people is a risk factor that may contribute to the development of mental illness.
